The Hans Wigzell Research Foundation (Hans Wigzells forskningsstiftelse) will today award
\nits third annual scientific prize to the neuroscientist Professor Li-Huei Tsai at
\nMassachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA. Professor Tsai is to
\nreceive the prize of USD 100,000 for her pioneering research on the causes and possible
\ntherapy of Alzheimer’s disease.
\nThe research, carried out at Picower Institute for Learning and Memory Department of Brain
\nand Cognitive Sciences Massachusetts Institute of Technology has rapidly resulted in
\nongoing, advanced clinical trials on Alzheimer’s patients, and has attracted considerable
\ninterest in the medical world.
\nPart of the foundation’s citation reads:
\n“Professor Li-Huei Tsai at MIT has made a number of impressive findings in Alzheimer’s
\ndisease. In her research she has been involved in developing completely new methods that,
\nthrough selective light stimulation in animal experiments, have been able to cause
\nAlzheimer’s disease mice to drastically improve in their disease.”

About Li-Huei Tsai
\nProfessor and Director of Picower Institute for Learning and Memory Department of Brain
\nand Cognitive Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
\nLi-Huei Tsai received her Ph.D degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical
\nCenter at Dallas. Dr. Tsai completed her postdoctoral work with Ed Harlow\u2019s laboratory at
\nCold Spring Harbor laboratory and Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1994, Dr. Tsai joined
\nthe faculty in the Department of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and was named an
\ninvestigator of Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1997. In 2006, she was appointed
\nProfessor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and joined the Picower
\nInstitute for Learning and Memory at MIT. In 2015, she co-founded the Aging Brain Initiative
\nat MIT.<\/p>\n
